Introduction

Mental health issues are common in medical patients and often go unrecognized. Not only can disease lead to mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety but mental illness itself can negatively affect disease treatment and outcomes. As an internal medicine resident, you will need basic knowledge about screening and management of mental illness in the outpatient setting, as well as management and treatment of mental illness in the hospital setting.

Adrienne D. Taylor, MD, is the Associate Director of the Division of Medical Psychiatry and Co-Program Director of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is an instructor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She completed her psychiatry residency at McGaw Medical Center at Northwestern University and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine. Her academic focus includes medical care of patients with severe mental illness, Burn, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Psychiatry, hospital violence, healthcare worker wellness, medical education, health equity and diversity.
