Introduction
The field of pediatric infectious diseases encompasses a variety of topics, ranging from the study of the epidemiology of infectious diseases in the community to treating children with infectious diseases. Pediatric infectious disease specialists provide care for immunocompetent children with serious infections (e.g., pneumonia, osteomyelitis, and meningitis) and travel-related infections, and they are often consulted for patients with conditions associated with possible infections, such as Kawasaki disease, fever of unknown origin, and congenital infections. Due to advances in transplant medicine, pediatric infectious disease specialists are increasingly caring for immunocompromised children with serious infections due to bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens.
This guide provides an introduction for medical students and residents to this diverse subspecialty and common infections encountered in both general pediatric and infectious disease rotations.

Deborah Lehman, MD, is Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. She serves as the Associate Vice Chair for Education in the department of pediatrics, where she oversees both the third-year clerkship and the fourth-year electives in the department. She also serves as an assistant dean for student affairs at the DGSOM and oversees the pediatric subspecialty fellowship training programs at UCLA. She is the recipient of several teaching awards and has created a popular pediatric infectious diseases curriculum for rotating medical students and residents. Her special interests include congenital infections and medical education.
