Introduction

The field of gastroenterology covers diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small and large bowel, pancreas, and liver and biliary system. The diseases that affect these organs range from infections to autoimmune disorders, and treatment often requires a multidisciplinary team of clinicians including gastroenterologists and surgeons.

This rotation guide reviews the following gastrointestinal conditions encountered on inpatient wards:

Arpan Mohanty, MBBS, MS is a hepatologist and clinical researcher at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center. She is board certified in advanced/ transplant hepatology, gastroenterology, and internal medicine, and specializes in treating acute and chronic complex liver diseases. Her research interests are in portal hypertension and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. Dr. Mohanty has expertise in evidence synthesis and guideline development and serves on the Practice Guidelines Committee for the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD).
